U.S. Graduate
Students to Meet with Nobel Laureates in Germany
Forty two American graduate students will travel
to Lindau, Germany, this week to meet with Nobel
Laureates. Since 1951, Nobel Laureates have met
annually with students and young researchers from
around the world. This year, 21 Laureates will
attend the June 25-29 meeting that will focus
on physics. The U.S. students will join more than
400 other students from around the world for the
week.
The Laureates will lecture on topics of their
choice and participate in daily small group discussions
with the students, and also meet with them informally
at lunch or dinner. The program gives young scientists
a chance to meet the leading scientists in their
field as well as their fellow students from around
the world.
The Office of Science of the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE), Oak Ridge Associated Universities
and the National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) are sponsoring the U.S. students who are
in their second or third year of graduate work.
The students are part of scientific teams doing
research funded by DOE or by NIST. Seven of the
students are pursuing their research at Energy
Department laboratories. The students were each
nominated by the head of their academic or research
institution.
Nobel Laureates in chemistry, physics and physiology/medicine
have gathered annually in Lindau, with meetings
rotating by discipline each year. Last year, at
the 50th anniversary of the meeting, 66 Nobel
laureates representing all three disciplines and
600 graduate students attended.
Before leaving for Germany, the students will
gather in Washington, D.C., on June 22 to meet
each other and get briefings from DOE officials
on the department’s science programs. A
list of the students and their institutions and
additional information on the Lindau meeting is
available at:http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/lindau2001/.
