DOE Names
Gerald Boyd New Manager for Oak Ridge Operations
Office
Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Energy
today announced that it has selected Gerald G.
Boyd to serve as Manager of the department's Oak
Ridge Operations office effective January 2003.
Dr. Raymond Orbach, Director of the department's
Office of Science, said, "Gerald Boyd's frontline
experience in managing the federal and contractor
workforce in Oak Ridge is a great asset to this
department. His experience in both the science
and environmental cleanup sectors makes Gerald
the perfect fit for preserving our strong relations
with the department's Oak Ridge National Labs,
ensuring progress in accelerating the environmental
remediation of cleanup sites in Oak Ridge, and
relating to the community's concerns and needs."
Boyd will report to the Office of Science and
will be responsible for a federal and contractor
workforce that totals approximately 12,000 individuals.
In November, Dr. Orbach announced that the department
will maintain a single site manager for its Oak
Ridge operations, to ensure that the department
meets its diverse mission requirements for its
Oak Ridge projects.
Management of the National Nuclear Security Administration's
(NNSA) Y-12 National Security Complex will continue
to reside with NNSA.
Boyd has been with the department since 1990,
serving in a variety of senior management positions.
He currently serves as assistant manager of Environmental
Management in Oak Ridge where he oversees an annual
budget of $850 million, including the management
of more than 100 federal employees and the supervision
of more than 2,000 contractor employees. Prior
to his current position, Boyd served as the Deputy
Assistant Secretary (DAS) and Associate DAS for
Science and Technology where he managed a $300
million national and international research and
development program involving environmental cleanup
technologies.
Boyd's federal service prior to DOE includes stints
at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and
over a decade of service in a variety of management
positions with other federal and state agencies.
He is a member of the American Association for
the Advancement of Science and the National Association
of Environmental Professionals, among other organizations.
Boyd is a graduate of the University of Mississippi
and received his master of science degree from
Florida State University. He is a native of Nashville,
Tennessee. He is married to Betty Jo Boyd and
they have two daughters.
Jim Turi, the current acting manager of Oak Ridge
Operations, will return to other duties within
the Office of Science.
The Oak Ridge Office is responsible for major
department science, technology and environmental
management programs. The Oak Ridge reservation,
located in the City of Oak Ridge in Anderson and
Roane Counties, is the site of the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory, East Tennessee Technology Park, Oak
Ridge Institute of Science and Education and the
Y-12 National Security Complex.
