DOE Names Gerald Boyd New Manager for Oak Ridge Operations Office

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Energy today announced that it has selected Gerald G. Boyd to serve as Manager of the department's Oak Ridge Operations office effective January 2003.

Dr. Raymond Orbach, Director of the department's Office of Science, said, "Gerald Boyd's frontline experience in managing the federal and contractor workforce in Oak Ridge is a great asset to this department. His experience in both the science and environmental cleanup sectors makes Gerald the perfect fit for preserving our strong relations with the department's Oak Ridge National Labs, ensuring progress in accelerating the environmental remediation of cleanup sites in Oak Ridge, and relating to the community's concerns and needs."

Boyd will report to the Office of Science and will be responsible for a federal and contractor workforce that totals approximately 12,000 individuals. In November, Dr. Orbach announced that the department will maintain a single site manager for its Oak Ridge operations, to ensure that the department meets its diverse mission requirements for its Oak Ridge projects.

Management of the National Nuclear Security Administration's (NNSA) Y-12 National Security Complex will continue to reside with NNSA.

Boyd has been with the department since 1990, serving in a variety of senior management positions. He currently serves as assistant manager of Environmental Management in Oak Ridge where he oversees an annual budget of $850 million, including the management of more than 100 federal employees and the supervision of more than 2,000 contractor employees. Prior to his current position, Boyd served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) and Associate DAS for Science and Technology where he managed a $300 million national and international research and development program involving environmental cleanup technologies.

Boyd's federal service prior to DOE includes stints at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and over a decade of service in a variety of management positions with other federal and state agencies. He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Association of Environmental Professionals, among other organizations. Boyd is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and received his master of science degree from Florida State University. He is a native of Nashville, Tennessee. He is married to Betty Jo Boyd and they have two daughters.

Jim Turi, the current acting manager of Oak Ridge Operations, will return to other duties within the Office of Science.

The Oak Ridge Office is responsible for major department science, technology and environmental management programs. The Oak Ridge reservation, located in the City of Oak Ridge in Anderson and Roane Counties, is the site of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, East Tennessee Technology Park, Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education and the Y-12 National Security Complex.
